If you keep track of festivals around the world, you may know that this year’s Burning Man festival in Black Rock City, Nevada has been flooded with rain which has turned the dusty flats of the old dried-up lake the city is built on, into impenetrable mud.

You can learn lessons from the Burning Man disaster and apply them to stay safe at a concert or festival.

Pack Extra Food and Water

Because of the rain in Nevada, up to 70,000 individuals became stuck in Black Rock City during the Burning Man Festival.

Given the uncertainty of when the flats would dry enough for them to leave, many reports came in of people having to ration their food and water.

When you’re going to an out-of-town festival that needs overnight stays or camping, always remember to bring more than enough water as well as food rations just in case of an emergency.

Bring a First Aid Kit

Those who have been to a festival and camped know that the campgrounds can seem like a chaotic free for all.

Because paramedics or first responders may be unable to access you or your friends during a medical emergency, it may help to have a first aid kit or take a CPR and general first aid course to possibly save a life.

Know Your Exit Plan

Setting up camp outside of town and getting to festival grounds is the start to many memorable experiences. It’s completely expected for someone to want to put their tent up and start the fun.

Make sure to spend some time looking around, orienting yourself within the space and formulating an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

For a usual concert, this could mean observing where all the exits are within a space. If you’re at a festival campsite, however, you’ll want to figure out all the ways to drive out and estimate how long it could take.

You may also choose to drive with winter tires or to bring tire chains for this specific muddy scenario.

Bring a Solar Power Source

A solar power bank for your phone could be helpful if you are stuck or need to make an emergency call out and don’t have any other way to charge your phone.

Considering that having a cell phone signal in today’s society is a lifesaver, you may want to keep one in your car for emergencies.

Expect the Unexpected
