Wapato Lake is a restored lake that was once a historic site. The lake is now part of the larger Wapato Lake Wildlife Refuge, which hosts several endangered species of birds that flock to the Pacific Northwest.

This shallow lake is located near King County Community College and offers an outdoor respite in the middle of town. 

The lake has a large trail that circles the area, and anglers are welcome to the lake to fish for healthy populations of trout, bass, sunfish, and crappie. 

American Lake

American Lake is the largest natural body of water in Pierce County. Visitors can enjoy both of the public parks that sit on the large lake: American Lake North Park & Marina and Harry Todd Park.

Each side of the lake offers sandy beaches for families to enjoy swimming and docks for picnics and fishing.

This quaint lake is fed by groundwater in the area and thus does not have any feeding channels. The large trail around the lake offers opportunities to view a number of wild animals, such as raccoons, birds, deer, and more.

The lake, however, is not open for swimming. It carries several different types of algae that bloom throughout the year.
