San Miguel de Allende is a colorful vibrant city that is a 90-minute drive from the nearest airport. While it may be a trek to get to this city, it is worth the trip.

Since lots of American ex-pats live here, it will be easy for you to navigate and talk to people in English.

This location is a foodies dream! To experience the people, cuisine, and culture, visit some of the restaurants and sample the local dishes: duck confit, shrimp cakes, and tacos al pastor. You will be impressed by the range of food styles offered here.

Oaxaca de Juárez

Also referred to as Oaxaca, the city is over 3,000 years old and contains pre-Columbian ruins, including archaeological sites from Teotihuacan.

The city’s celebrations start with an amazing parade full of vivid costumes, painted skulls, and flags. The entire day is a joyful celebration with lots of excited people and elaborate decorations strung up all around the city.

Some of the delicious foods that Oaxaca is famous for is a thin fried tortilla with refried beans, avocados, meat, and salsa called tlayuda. Oaxaca is also known for their mole, chocolate, and chili sauce.

The state produces some of the world’s finest blue agave plants which are used to produce top quality mezcal and tequila. While in the area, you can book a mezcal tasting to gain insight on the sweeter variations of mezcal.

Mérida

Situated on the Yucatan Peninsula, many tourists traveling from Tulum to Mérida.

The ancient history and artifacts of the Mayans can be seen in the Mayan Cultural Museum. Also in the region, there are several Mayan pyramids and ruins that can be visited.

The cities Cholula and Puebla are recognized for their hot sauces, salsas, and moles.

This is Tlachihualtepetl the largest pyramid in the western hemisphere. It contains tunnels, and much of the excitement is from being able to enter the pyramid and experience it from the inside.

Guadalajara

Guadalajara is located in the Jalisco region of Mexico which is famous for the blue agave plants used to make tequila and raicilla. The city also has beautiful architecture and cathedrals in the Gothic style.

When you visit the city, make sure you try birria, a spicy slow-cooked goat stew, and torta ahogada (which means “drowned sandwich”) as it’s also covered in the spicy chile de arbol salsa. These two dishes are a must!
