Hitting the road with family and friends is fun, but hitting the road alone? That’s empowering.

At first, solo travel might seem like an immediate “no” — it’s daunting going somewhere on your own! — but think about it: you can enjoy the experience at your own pace, get out of your comfort zone, and boost your confidence, all while taking in the sights and sounds of a new destination. Solo traveling sounds like a blast when you put it that way, right?

Fortunately, America has no shortage of destinations for independent travelers to find adventure or relaxation. Check out these six solo travel-friendly cities in the U.S.

Austin, Texas

Texas’s capital city has a friendly and fun atmosphere and no shortage of things to do, making it a perfect stop for anyone traveling alone. Attractions like Barton Creek Greenbelt trail appeal to outdoor enthusiasts, while tours of the State Capitol building and visits to the LBJ Presidential Library call to solo-traveling history buffs. Between these locations, plus an abundance of art museums, shops, restaurants and food trucks, and places to stay, Austin, Texas has something for everyone. Plus, it has got a certain quirky charm — a signature “weirdness” — that everyone can appreciate.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is a southern gem, complete with charm, good food, and plenty of opportunity to explore the great outdoors. Give yourself enough time to hike the Blue Ridge Parkway, Craggy Gardens, and one of DuPont State Forest’s trails. Explore downtown Asheville on a guided city tour or on your own, check out all the River Arts District has to offer, and spend a few hours visiting the beautiful Biltmore Estate.

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville was named the ninth-best destination for solo travelers based on a TripAdvisor study and TikTok popularity, so we’re extra confident in including Music City in our top seven. The Tennessee city might not seem like an obvious choice for solo travel, as it’s a bit of a party town. However, that’s part of what makes it so appealing for lone journeymen: there are plenty of opportunities to meet new people. If you’re a music fan, take a trip down to Music Row or catch a show at the Ryman or the Grand Ole Opry. Don’t leave town until you’ve grabbed a bite to eat at Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack and had a drink at 6th & Peabody.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

The heated springs from which this city, nestled in the Ouachita Mountains, gets its name make Hot Springs, Arkansas, a must-visit location for anyone seeking a relaxing getaway. Take a stroll down Bathhouse Row and stop at Buckstaff or Quapaw for a serene soak. Then, spend a few hours taking in the Natural State’s breathtaking scenery at Garvan Woodlands Garden or Hot Springs National Park

Boulder, Colorado

Boulder is a remarkably friendly city, bound to make solo travelers feel safe and welcome throughout their stay. The pedestrian-only Pearl Street Mall area is the place to go for shopping, people-watching, eating, and drinking. A trip to this northern Colorado city is incomplete without catching a glimpse of the Flatirons, so don’t forget to make time for hiking the trails around the sandstone formations or getting up close and personal with them on a rock-climbing route.

Portland, Oregon

Portland has a calm, moody energy perfect for lone travelers searching for somewhere peaceful to enjoy their solitude. But that calmness doesn’t mean it’s boring — far from it, actually! The International Rose Test Garden is a sight for sore eyes and one of Portland’s claims to fame you don’t want to miss. Spend some time exploring an art gallery in the Pearl District before stopping by the famous Powell’s Books — with more than four floors of new and used titles, it’s the largest independent bookstore in the world! If you find yourself in this city on a Saturday, shop and mingle with local makers at the Portland Saturday Market.
