Taking a trip through Europe can be a life-changing vacation, and many people only get to experience it once in their lifetimes.

However, when planning your trip, you’ll want to steer clear of the unsafe cities in Europe to ensure you’re not the victim of pickpocketing or other petty theft.

Be sure to read this article and avoid these unsafe locations in Europe to keep your travels fun and exciting.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is a well-known city for people to visit who wish to partake in the thriving nightlife and legal marijuana use. The city is also well-known for its red-light district, making it a hotbed for international crime.

For most tourists though, being pickpocketed, robbed, or assaulted while out partying is not uncommon. Unfortunately, Amsterdam is a place to skip if you wish to remain safe during your travels through Europe.

London, UK

While London is a favorite tourist destination for many, it’s also a hotbed for gang activity and drug use.

This world-class city has many of the same issues that all major metropolitan cities have, pickpocketing, petty theft, and robberies. When traveling alone, or if you just wish to avoid any criminal encounters, it can be a brilliant idea to skip London altogether in favor of the English countryside.

Paris, France

Paris is, unfortunately, a city known for their many pickpocketers and tourist scams.

But now, there are many riots and protests against the government and the police in France. The protesters aren’t afraid to light fires, break windows, and set off bombs. So right now, Paris is not a safe place to visit.

For a much more peaceful experience in France, consider visiting Giverny in the countryside, where you can visit the garden that inspired Monet’s famous painting of the water lilies.

Brussels, Belgium

Many people visit Brussels for the world-class culinary scene or even the famous french fries and mayo you can order from street vendors.

While the city has a clean appearance, it’s also well known for common tourist scams. When visiting, you’ll need to watch out for taxi, hotel, and even tourist guide scams.

The city has also been the victim of several tourist attacks, so it can often be a place with cheap flights and accommodations.

Porto, Portugal

While Porto has a rich history with wine, food, and architecture, this area of Portugal has a high unemployment rate and increased crime rates and muggings.

It’s generally recommended to avoid walking around with your passport or large sums of cash. Also, be sure to pre-book car accommodations to and from the airport in advance. Due to the regional dialect of Portuguese, many taxi drivers use this to their advantage to overprice cab rides or to get lost on purpose.
