Happy 247th birthday, America!
It’s Independence Day in the United States, and we’re taking a look at some of the top destinations for Americans who love their country.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
You can’t get more patriotic than Philadelphia. Sure, it’s also known for Philly Cheese Steaks, the Liberty Bell, and Rocky Balboa, but it’s also basically the place where the United States was born. Way back in 1776, this is where the Declaration of Independence was signed, as well as the U.S. Constitution later on. Every year on July 4th, the Declaration is read aloud at Independence Hall, where it was originally signed.
Washington, D.C.
Founded in 1790, Washington, D.C., was created solely for the purpose of being the nation’s capital city. All the important decisions for our country are made here by the President and the other members of the government at the White House, and it is also home to the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, where thousands of U.S. soldiers have been laid to rest. The latter is the location of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which honors the soldiers whose remains were not found or identified.
Boston, Massachusetts
Heard of a little thing called the Boston Tea Party? That happened here! And so did many other important events in American history, such as the settling of the first American colony, the exact site of which you can still visit at Plimoth Plantation. Boston is so patriotic that it even has its own dedicated holiday — Patriots Day — which commemorates the Battle of Lexington and Concord.
New York, New York
American movies are filled with scenes that take place in New York, making most people outside the country think that this city is representative of the United States as a whole. And, in a way, it is! New York, New York, is home to one of the most identifiable U.S. landmarks: the Statue of Liberty. This massive monument to America was gifted to the country by the French in 1876 to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Keystone, South Dakota
The name “Keystone” might not ring a bell for you right away, but rest assured that this is one of the most patriotic towns, not just in South Dakota but in the whole country. You might know it better as the home to Mount Rushmore, the giant sculpture of four great American presidents carved into the side of a mountain. How could this city not be patriotic when it is being watched over by the larger-than-life likes of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Teddy Roosevelt?
